The 8th book in the History of Middle Earth series continues showing you Tolkien's drafts of his excellent trilogy.
Here's some of the interesting things it discusses:
1) Tolkien considered having Sauraman help the good guys in the end at one point.
2) Tolkien wrote out a complete day by day timeline to where every single person was and what they were doing during the Lord of the Rings series. I mean to the point where he knew where on the map they were!
It's incredible details like that which really show you why the series was so good. Another good read!
