My new car

This week I decided to get a new car, a Nissan Versa! Great mileage and very roomy, I love it.
I can even fit 4 little goobers in the trunk with space to spare!

Bub goes to Duke Fest

Coming up next week are videos and pics of our weekend trip to Duke Fest. Megan's "comic con" She's wanted to go for years and we finally had the chance a few weeks ago in Livingston, LA.

Gulf Shores Pics (2)

Here's Jeremy's kids making Super Hero poses.
On our last day at the beach we took these together. It had been raining the whole day but it cleared up just in time for us to get some great shots!
Overall, it was a wonderful vacation. It was nice long and relaxing. Just what I needed to get me thru the rest of the year!

I'll post my favorite video from it tomorrow.

Gulf Shores Pics (1)

So here's one of the little guy himself (Tallis) about to do a cannonball. I'll load the video of it later this week. It's pretty amazing to watch.
And here's Megan's favorite pic of the little guy that she took.
Last but not least is Caleb's sunburned back! Ha! It happened on the first day too, so for the rest of week we got to hear him whine and moan about how much it hurt. Hilarious!

I'll post more pics tomorrow.

Bub goes Sky Diving (2)

This is her in the boat ready to leave. Unfortunately Adam and I weren't allowed to come with and take pics or video. (You have to buy their photo package for that)

But I'll have more stuff for you tomorrow!

Bub goes Sky Diving (1)

So on our annual family trip to the beach Megan decided to go sky diving. Here she is before they go.

Another video's happening soon...

Meet the new Batman

So WB dropped a bomb shell on us Thursday announcing Ben Affleck as the new Batman in the next Superman movie. After Christian Bale turned down the role for $50 million this was WB's next choice.

From the man who gave us such classic's as "Gigli" and his first super hero flick "Daredevil" will now be the next one to don the hollowed cape and cowl.

And I love it.

You heard me right, I love this choice. For a couple of reasons listed below:

1) Ben Affleck can act. Yes he's had his choppy spots here and there but were these really his fault? To be honest the only reason Daredevil failed was it's poor story line and terrible CGI moments. Other than that Affleck's acting wasn't bad at all!

2) Fanboy outrage. This is really stirring the pot in the comic-nerd world right now and I'm loving it. But the fanboy's have not always been right. They hated Michael Keaton back in the day too and look how he turned out. I'm not comparing Affleck to Keaton, I'm just saying...

3) WB's complete ignorance on choosing Affleck for the role. One of the reasons I love this choice is because it's proof of how bad the WB Execs DON'T know their fan base! The average comic book fan STOPPED watching Affleck after Daredevil and still have him labeled as a bad actor in their minds. Regardless on how well he does it's going to be a hard sell from the producers to get fans to accept him prior to the release.

4) Whatever happens, the ignorant-cow-grazing fan boys will flock to theaters to see this movie. Comic book movies are on a win streak right now and I see that going on for at least another couple of years. If these folks loved Man of Steel, they deserve Affleck as the new Batman for the next. And after all their complaining, EVERYONE will show up in theaters and it'll become the biggest hit at the box office for DC yet. Nothing's going to stop that.

Will it be a good movie? I highly doubt it. DC hasn't impressed me since Batman Forever and it took me almost 10 years to appreciate that movie. (Val Kilmore was an awesome Bruce Wayne)

But who knows? Maybe they'll cast Gilbert Goddfrey as Lex Luthor and their path to the Dark Side will be complete.

The last Star Wars book?

So I finished reading Star Wars Crucible and wanted to make a short book report on it. (since it's a Saturday and I have no one else to talk to about it)

First off, this may be the very last book (story line wise) to come out if JJ decides to reboot the novels, so reading this was a little sad with that in mind. Overall I enjoyed it. Not the best book bye far but one good enough to end the series on.

If you recall this book was to signify the official "retirement" of the main characters and focus only on the younger generation. Of course it delivered a whallop of a story with the main characters getting pretty badly mutilated at a few points in the book. I won't go in to spoilers but even I was shocked with how far they went in violence in this one. Easily one of the darkest books of the entire series. That friggin Clone Wars Episode about Obi Wan and Anikin on a planet with two children representing both sides of the Force is made the focal point again, I guess they just wanted to drive it home that they weren't just being cute when connecting the Clone Wars cartoon together with the book series. I'm almost to the point where I want to watch that episode again because of all the meaning the novels have added to it over the years.

Anyway, towards the end our heroes are triumphant and the story line is moved a little further on even though you could stop it right here in this book with only a minor loose end or two to wrap up.

If the sale to Disney had not happened I'm sure the authors had another brilliant story in mind to tell. I'm afraid it will never come into fruition now. I purposely found myself reading this book slower than the others solely because I knew this could be the final original story of my beloved characters until their universe comes crumbling down.

Guess we;ll just have to wait and see if the Force will be truly with them in the end...

Christopher Award Predictions

Now it's time to give my predictions to tonight's awards. I did a poor job of it last time, so let's see if my record will improve this time around!

Best Featured Actress in a Play: This is a hard one since they're all from the same show. I'll go with Cindy Scott but will people still remember who was who in this? This could end up being a tie between any one of these girls.

Best Featured Actor in a Play: Again, this one's up in the air and could be a tie as well. Since they all came from "Daddy's Dyin'" I'm gonna spin the wheel and say Tom Longnecker gets it.

Best Featured Actress in a Musical: Another hard one. Cats was a great show but will the voters still remember it after all this time? Here's to hoping they will and McKenna Rae gets the win!

Best Featured Actor in a Musical:  Troy Wold. The members love him no matter what he does. He wins out over the cast members of Cats.

Best Leading Actress: Yikes, this one's hard. If Sound of Music hadn't delivered a great show this would have been easy. But I'm going to say it's not enough to stop the mighty Cats and Linnea Fayard Allen wins for her performance in Cats!

Best Leading Male: Russ Givens. No contest. And though I love my boy Cejay, Russ'll win big too.

Best Play: Cats. Another easy pick since the members aren't likely to forget that show for a long time to come.

If you have any predictions, go ahead and post them hear before the ceremony begins. Can you beat my picks?

We'll see!

The Worst Foods

And now it's time to talk about the worst of the foods that I've already mentioned the best of. Here they are:

Worst Chicken: Popeye's

The chicken's tough, biscuits are cold and their sides taste like globs of paint. I tried being a fan but after years gave up giving them "another" chance. I'm just ashamed they're trying for the whole "New Orleans Style" marketing ploy when all it really does is give us a bad name.

Worst Sammich: Schlotzsky's

The first time I tried it, I had to force it down. The 2nd, I only ate half of it then went someone else to get something to eat and the 3rd time I spit it out and asked for my money back. This is an awful place. I see less of them around now which is a good sign that they're slowly folding and slowly fading away from our world.

Good riddance.

Worst Pizza: Little Ceasar's

Oh how the mighty have fallen. A long time ago I would have ranked this as my top pizza but since their "reincarnation" they've become a step below cardboard with cheese on top. The pizza's are tasteless and have the quality of a "Dollar Tree" item. Given the choice between this and a cabbage I'd choose the cabbage all day!

Any other nominations for "The Worst"?

Best Pizza and Sammich

Since I've already good the "foodie" theme going for me I thought why not let it go the rest of the week! So here's my other top pics for Pizza and a good Sandwich!

Best Sammich: Jimmy Johns

This is one of the best things I've ever eaten. Working in Dallas all that time I ate at Jimmy Johns roughly 70% of the time. No only are the sandwiches good but they pride themselves on fast service. Most times after I ordered my sandwich would already be waiting at the other end of the table for me to pick up. They're the real deal when it comes to "fast food"

If you haven't visited one you should seek one out on your next road trip, stop in, eat and write me a thank you card afterwards.

Best Pizza: Crico's

Before I left on my trip to Gulf Shores last week I told Megan I'd never had a pizza that really left me that impressed...then I came to this place!

Crico's pizza is piping hot, fresh and the best tasting ingredients I've ever had in a pizza. Checking them out on the way down we decided to make a stop by there and check it out and we weren't disappointed! They even had this one pizza on their buffet where they had the Parmesan cheese cooked into the pizza!  At first it looked disgusting but after giving it a try I quickly returned for seconds.

Sadly the only location is in Gulf Shores, but if they ever branch out this is the place you should go!

Best Chicken

Fried chicken is always a delight to have. But we rarely eat it as much as burgers or pizza and though I love me a burger I can always go for a fried chicken day every once in a while as well. So here's my Top 3!

3) Church's

Don't be hatin', this chicken is good! The best tasting out of the "big 3" (KFC and Popeyes) of fast food. Never had a bad meal with them yet!

2) Chic-a-fila

One of Megan's favorites and thought they're on the expensive side their chicken is worth it. In addition their service is beyond anything else in the Fast Food Market. To compare their service to other big chains is as unfair as the Braves taking on a t-ball squad.

1) Chicken Express

Again Megan and I are in agreement that this is the best fried chicken hands down. It's got a perfect crisp fry with unbelievable tender juicy chicken inside. ALL of their sides are incredible and the service matches Chic-a-fila at times. If you're not around the great state of Texas you're sadly missing out.

That's my Top 3, what's yours?

Another letdown

So it looks like they'll be no big announcements for the new Star Wars movies. In fact, this expo didn't even talk about the rumored Star Wars Land at the parks either so for fans it was the ultimate letdown.

The only thing they stated was JJ was still involved and it's still happening the summer of 2015, which leads me to believe...it's all a lie.

Think about it, to make such a big production movies would take 2 years which would barely put them within their target date. Also, why do they keep insisting JJ's still the director? Why make such a big deal out of rumor if it's not true? Something's telling me there a bigger problems brewing than we know about.

I wonder how long they'll be able to keep these problems silent until it all boils over.

We shall see...

Worst Star Wars Books (updated)

After reading some of the latest Star Wars books I've decided to re-work some of my Top 10 list in this category. I won't repeat anything I've already talked about in my previous post here just my newest additions.

10) Planet Of Twilight

I like this book better in this spot. As I said for my previous #10 (Dark Forces trilogy) I didn't think that one belonged and was only using it to round off my Top 10 list at the time. This one however, deserves it.

9) Red Harvest

What the Sith would be like if it were written as a WB TV show.

8) Crystal Star

Again, if you'd have told me there would be 7 other books worse than this one, I wouldn't have believed you. Maybe I should read this one again, it'll probably look like a masterpiece now!

7) Clone Wars: Seige/Gambit Duology

That's right! Even this series moved down a notch to make way for another leader in the pack!

6) Coruscant Nights

This series was so bad it retained it's #6 ranking as before instead of moving down like all the others did. After reading the 4th book in this series I've come to the conclusion that this book should be ignored by the average leader.

Here's some more fodder to place on a series I've already spoken about: In book 4 the main character Jax not only gets the upper hand on Vader once, BUT TWICE! Showing just how cunning a Jedi he really is. He even figures out the Vader is Anakin too! Making him the only one besides Obi Wan to know the truth. Of course this Jedi is too good to die and after fooling Vader again ( which they make seem easy) he's off to the stars for more adventures.

Pathetic, god-like writing about a character who shouldn't be that important to the universe. Just like Stackpole's "I, Jedi" the authors want you to think of their character as the best one around! (forget Luke Skywalker right?) They had potential to move DOWN this list with the release of this book, but they failed miserably and yet again find themselves in 6th place.

#5 Tatooine's Ghost

Poor Troy. His only failure to date. This "Ghost" will haunt him for years.

#4 Shatterpoint

Even this poorly written novel had a drop in the rankings thanks to this next book!

#3 Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void

Please welcome with me our newest addition to the "Worst Top Ten" Where do I start on this book? It's horribly written. I was shocked to learn Tim Lebbon's written several novels before and for his sake I hope they were better than this. It takes place over 25,000 years before Episode 4. There is no hyperspace, yet many aliens are in this. I guess they all traveled years in space to be with eachother. And the Jedi don't have lightsabers yet, just swords.

To be honest that's all they did to make it seem "in the past". The still have blasters, space ships and droids. The earliest stories they had in the Star Wars storyline before this was the "Golden Age of the Jedi" comic book series that didn't amount to much either. The problem is getting people to care what happened. There have been only 2 storylines that have taken place in the past that fans cared about. The Tales of the Jedi comic book from Dark Horse. (which is excellent) and The Old Republic storyline which also receives added exposure thanks to the video games. Other than that, the rest have been ho-hum.

This book does a horrible job sending you back and forth between the history of the main character without any indication of doing so. One paragraph break may be happening a few hours after the last or 10 years ago in the past. You never know till you read a few lines in. Instead of clearly marking the difference in the time lines the author goes with a weird 3rd partner depiction of the event of the past. Like you're sitting in a classroom with someone giving you an account of events. For example:

She walks into the room. She looks around, no one is there. "Funny" she thinks to herself, for in the Force she senses a presence that is not easily ignored. She is scared, frightened even, that this book will suck for anyone reading it as well.

The overall story is drab too which lives you not caring whether our hero makes it out alive or not in the end. I LOVE Star Wars books, but even this one was tough for me to read. I just hope any new fans coming to the Expanded Universe for the first time don't try this one first because it's 1st in chronological order, because they might not make it very far after that.

#2 Republic Commando Series

You still suck Karen Traviss.

#1 I, Jedi

The winner and still champion! I wonder if anything will ever come close to this disaster on paper. Hmmm... A Jar Jar novel perhaps?

Other burgers

Now it's time to give out other mentions to burgers I've had in the past.

Best fast food burger: Hardees

While fast food restaurants struggle to bring in new customers this place silently sits back and delivers unequaled quality in it's brand. A Hardees burger (or Carl's Jr is you're on the West Coast) is by far head and shoulders above the rest. Whenever we travel down to my grandmothers in Mobile, AL I always make a stop at this place. Sadly there are none in LA yet.

Honorable Mention: Steak and Shake

Though not exactly a "strictly burgers" kind of joint, this place does give you a million burger options to choose from on it's menu. I could go to this place every day for a week and not be able to sample their huge selection. It's affordable and down right tasty burgers are what brings customers through their door. Again, we don't have one in Monroe which is a shame, I think it'd make a killing here! Not only can you enjoy one of a hundred shake flavors but you can also see your burger being cooked on the grill right there out in the open! It's a wonderful place!

Most Over-rated: In N Out

I had heard so much about this place over the years that I just couldn't wait to try it. That being said, when I finally did it was the biggest disappointment since seeing the smoke monster on Lost. This burger is plain jane and barely beats out a local joint we have around here called Sonic. Don't get me wrong, the burger isn't bad but there's plenty of better ones out there in my opinion. I'm clueless as to why this burger consistently makes it into everyone's "Top 10" list. I guess those people really haven't lived much to be ranking this mediocre burger so high.

Most Desired to try out: Elevation Burger

I love me some Food Network. And when they did a special about this place, I was all ears. I wanted to try it during our last trip to Dallas but didn't have the time. This burger looks good. It gets good reviews and hopefully on our next trip I'll be able to try it out.

Ok folks, that's it/ Any other "burger" nominations out there? I'd be interested to hear them.

Best Burgers

I love burgers. A lot. Everywhere we go I'm always on the lookout for good burgers. I've been to a lot of places and tried a lot of things but to me burgers are the most enjoyable to try. So today I decided to give you the Top 3 burgers I've ever had.

#3 Simply Burgers

This is a burger I had in Dallas a lot last year when I working there for Chase. It's a fantastic burger with a butter glaze to give the burger a beautiful shine. Their sign says it all. They simply make burgers here. So don't go if you have someone hoping to order a chicken sammich, hot dog or salad. Though I'm not grading the fries in my reviews, their's are down right tasty and should be devoured during your meal. Excellent place!

#2 Fudruckers

I feel in love with this place a few years ago. Great burger, unlimited toppings to choose from. They have every kind of sauce you can imagine putting on a burger. From honey mustard to spicy mayonnaise they have it all! I've been to several locations around the US and each time they've delivered an excellent burger. One of my favorites was when visiting my sister in Orlando and coming across their "limited time" Ostrich Burger which was AMAZING!

#1 Five Guys

#1 forever in my heart will be this place. No one does it better than them. The flavor of their burgers far exceeds any others I've tried. The fries alone could be famous but these burgers are out of this world! The only reason I don't visit the one near me as much is because they put it in the WORST traffic area in the Twin Cities and you can hardly get in or out unless it's 10am or you decide to eat late at 8pm. Terrible location for such a great store. Whoever planned that one out "He chose...poorly."

So what about you? What's the best burger you've ever had? Does it beat any of these? I doubt it!

Caleb Dancing like an idiot

This is from our trip last week to see the Miss. Braves. (a minor league team) They ended up winning the game in the 10th 6-5. During the game we won free wings, caught 5 balls (Caught 2 of them myself) I even caught one of the tshirts that get shot out from a canon gun. (a first for me!)

As you can see there weren't that many people there but if you ever decide to go to a minor league game I highly suggest it's during a weekday!

In-between the 10th inning I yelled out a joke to the ump who laughed at the punchline! Megan was shocked to discover he was even listening to me in the first place!

Fun times, fun times....

September Movie review

Time to review September movies...and since Riddick is the only one worth seeing I'll only speak on that.

This is actually one of the few movies I'm looking forward to seeing this year. I don't know of a single person who hated "Pitch Black" and I thought the Chronicles of Riddick was truly amazing.

I've seen the previews for this one and it looks incredible and also, fate would have it that it opens up on our anniversary! I can't think of any better way to celebrate 5 years with my sweetie than taking her out to see this film! (I'm sure she'll be overjoyed)

What about you? Are you going to see it?

Trip Advisor (the REAL story)

After speaking to someone this weekend about the website I've decided to write a post to tell everyone what you might not have known about this site.

It's not as honest as you think.

Sure they have good and bad post on there at times and I know a lot of people use them and I used to be one of them too until something that happened last year changed my mind.

Megan and I were on one of our several visits to the Dallas area last year when one of the hotels we regularly stayed at gave us a horrible experience. When it rained our entire room starting this awful creaking sound that lasted most the night. When we mentioned it to the lady behind the counter that morning she didn't seem to care. In fact, she ignored me and started speaking to the next guest in line instead.

Of course, I was livid after this and went online to write a complaint. I also wrote one on Tripadvisor stating our displeasure during our stay. Now this particular hotel had not had a complaint about them on the site so when I logged one all hell seemed to break loose.

The hotel manager called me and asked me to delete my comment because (she said) it wasn't true. She refused to believe her employee (who turned out to be the Asst Manager!) would ever act like that an I must be lying. I told her it was the truth and I would not remove my comment on Tripadvisor because I wanted everyone else to know that when it rains that her hotel is NOT the place they want to be in if they want a good nights rest.

A week later I got an email from Tripadvisor stating that had removed my comment about the hotel and unless I was able to PROVE what happened the were not re-posting it on there site. I.E. "We play favorites and when a hotel doesn't want a negative comment on their site we'll remove it for a price."

So are the comments true on this website? Sure. But don't believe it when you see a hotel with NO complaints. All it means is that hotel pays good money to make all of it's complaints "go away"

Just thought I'd let you know!

3 movies you don't own (but you should)

So last month I bought a few 80's movies and kinda regretted my decision right after. Did I really need these movies or were the bought on impulse of nostalgia. When they arrived in the mail, I watched them....and I'm so thankful I now have them in my collection. Each one was FANTASTIC and I need to make sure you don't miss them either!

Ok, here we go:

CONDORMAN
Woody Wilkins (yes his last name is actually Wilkins) is a comic book writer who's friend from the CIA enlist him to help a Russian spy defect to the US.

This is back when Russia was the bad guy in most of our movies and it's a fantastic story. I don't know how I forgot the character's last name was my own AND he draws his own comics?! Hmmm...hits a little too close to home for me!

Look at him, I kinda even look like that! Megan would agree, I'd dress up in something similar and run around the world in a get up like that. In fact, if the CIA called today for my help....maybe Sanrioman could become more than just a dream....

THE LAST STARFIGHTER
This is the best made movies of the bunch. With an incredible soundtrack you follow the adventures of Alex Rogen, A teenager from earth who beats an arcade game and is recruited by an alien from another galaxy to help fight in the exact war that he played in the game. (The arcade was a practice simulation of battle)

The best line in the whole film (and there's a bunch of them believe me) but when the villain shown above finds the command ship he's on is about to be destroyed is asked by his 2nd hand "Sir, what do we do?!" His response is classic.

"We DIE!"

You have to see the movie to get the full effect but it's great. I even bought the soundtrack right after viewing this film. Excellent.

 FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR
Last and certainly not least is this CLASSIC 80's film about a boy who has traveled from 1978 to the today (1986) and is "alone in time". He escape the scientist at NASA and discovers the space ship he actually came in but doesn't remember how. Now he's got one goal in mind...to return home.

Everything about this movie is what you love about 80's movies in general. It was a real gem to watch and even though it'd been literally 2 decades since I've seen it I still remembered every scene the moment it came on the screen.

These 3 movies are well worth your time. Believe me, you won't regret it.

Prank week

Who doesn't love a good prank? I've played some great ones in my time and I still play them every now and again today. Though not as epic as some of my past ones they're still pretty good.

So this week I've decided to show some of my favorite pranks I've seen on the web.

The fun starts tomorrow. Hope you enjoy!

Allan Quartermain Series

So the next series of books I was going to read was the Allan Quartermain series. Right after reading the last page of the Oz books, I excitedly went on Amazon to download this series next. I was so excited to read it until I started the first page of "King Solomon's Mines" and discovered to my horror.... these books are all written in "1st person" like reading someone's diary.

I know it was a popular style back then but I HATE stories written in the 1st person. I struggled thru the first few chapters of the book and sadly, tapped out altogether in reading the series. I hated to, because I really looked forward to reading this one but I just can't put up with what I consider to be a lazy writing style.

So now it's back to catching up on my Star Wars books for the year and hoping something else comes along and catches my eye in the next few weeks.

My trip to Dallas

So we just got back from our trip to Dallas and I wanted to tell you about it today.
First off, we witnessed one of the most amazing things in MLB history! For only the 2nd time ever we saw a back to back to back walk-off homerun to end the game!! Each game ended up being a nail biter and as now being hailed as one of the most exciting series all year!

I have to agree. Being in the stadium for all three games was amazing. The crowd was unbelievable each time! I'm SO glad we were able to be a part of it.

One other thing I tried out was a place call Smashburger. I'd heard good things from others and wanted to see for myself if they were any good. I wasn't disappointed. Though it didn't crack my top 3 places for burgers and defiantly was up there!

Anyway, that's how my week went. How was yours?

The Oz books review

So it took a few months but I was finally able to complete all 15 Oz books written by Frank L Baum and I have to say...interesting.

So what are they like? Well, pretend Tim Burton wrote a series of children's novels and there you have it! There were so many strange characters in these books. For instance, a glass cat with pink brains (so you can see them work) a female chicken named Bill, the Shaggy Man (with his Love Magnet) a Tin Swordsman (not to be confused with the Tin Woodsman) a sawhorse with golden caps on his feet (so the wood would never break or chip) and a kid called Button Bright who always got lost.

These were regular characters too, not just one-shot side stories from the author. I did have a good time reading them but I don't know who'd I'd recommend them too. They're children's books so adults may be bored with the simple (and often silly) stories but then again I'm not sure kids would know what to think either if they read them.

So there you have it! A solid "thumbs to the side" conclusion for this series.

Now on to my next series of books!!
