Best Lex Luthor

Now it's time to review Superman's big baddy Lex Luthor. This is where the competition gets good!

4) John Shea

Did anyone even remember there was a Lex Luthor in the Lois and Clark TV series?!?

Me neither. Which is why this guy gets last place.

3) Kevin Spacey

He did a great job as Lex! Sadly it was in Superman Returns, which is why he's ranked 3rd.

2) Gene Hackman

Oh yeah! Now we're getting to the heavy hitters! Mean Gene played Luthor like no one ever has! He was excellent at it and a wonderful compliment to an already strong performance by Reeves. Why do you think he was in every Superman movie? Why do you think most folks say Superman 3 was the worst movie in the series? Because Gene wasn't in it, that's why!

1) Michael Rosenbaum

Yep, no question about it. Rosenbaum played Lex the best! He was the only reason to watch Smallville for years and when he wised up and realized the show was going from bad to awful he jumped ship early in the series.

The way he played Luthor was the whole reason I started watching the show. In fact, I wished they'd made him the star and Clark as the co-star. The series would have been a whole lot more interesting then.

Have a good weekend folks!

No way, man. Here is the real ranking:

1.Gene Hackman - totally brilliant, and a wonderful counterpoint to Reeve. He OWNED that role. Great actor in a great role, and can't be beat.

2.Michael Rosenbaum - I do like Rosenbaum, but he can't hold a candle to Hackman. I like that they painted Clark/Lex as friends to begin with, and there was an interesting dynamic as they became enemies. But that was more the writing and less Rosenbaum's acting chops. He is a distant second.

3.John Shea - yes, fans of Lois and Clark remember that there was a Lex Luthor. He was only in season 1, but then pops up for a guest turn in about 5 episodes later on. Remember, there were only 4 seasons. I thought Shea played him really well, actually, and was Luthor was actually engaged to Lois for a time, creating a very tense situation for Clark/Superman. It was good writing, and the show lost a good bit when he left.

4.Spacey - He wasn't bad, but he wasn't good either, and was drug down by the movie. Eh.

Gene Hackman played it too much like "superfriends". I agree with your Rosenbaum pick, and Agree that Spacey was really held down by the film itself, he has every bit of acting ability to have been the best.

Superfriends. Funny! Never thought of it like that but he was a little too pleasant for the role, wasn't he?
