Ok, after taking a few days and shifting through the information online I've come up with a few observations on my own:
1) People are idiots.
Some knew about the Expanded Universe material while others seemed to be completely oblivious to it, yet claimed to be Star Wars fans. I'm not saying they should have read the books but geez, at least be AWARE of them before you write a column claiming to be a fan.
2) A "future" setting is the best option.
A lot of folks are calling for the original cast to come back, but that's going to be more trouble than what's it's worth. Besides inflated paychecks they'll be dealing with issues of fans comparing them to the old series and no matter how good these new movies are it's safe to say they will pale in comparison to the original trilogy.
So what should you do? Send us 200 years into the future after the events of Return of the Jedi. New cast, new characters. It'll give a great feel to the series and allow Disney to tell their own tale of a galaxy far far away.
This makes everyone happy. No worrying about an old Han Solo and Luke Skywalker escaping from an intergalactic retirement home, no worrying about the Expanded Universe continuity either. In fact, you create new tales with a fresh story line without having to worry about the past 6 movies.
This to me is by far the BEST option. I just hope Disney's able to see it too.
Disney can go a long way with this. TV Shows like Star Wars: Underworld (which Lucas never released the scripts for) is an option or set it in the same time period as the movies and cross the storylines.
At Dragon Con Timothy Zahn gave some great advice when it comes to writing Star Wars. "Find your own section of the galaxy for your story to take place and stay there."
What he meant was, keep everything you create in it's own little world so that it doesn't affect the rest of the universe. This way you can move a story along without any resistance. The same is true for Disney.
I've already spoken about Theme Park, CD and DVD options but imagine what else they can do? Split the Star Wars universe into 3 storylines. The Old Republic, (the past) Lucas' Trilogy (the present) Disney's new story (the future)
Tons of books and comics to add to it and you've got the biggest money maker around! Folks who love the world Lucas created can stay and play in that time period. Gamers of the Old Republic get their own period and the newbies growing up will have the future movies as well.
Everyone's happy.
3) Too many rumors flying around.
NO ONE (not even Disney) has a clear idea of where they're going with this and I'm guessing they won't until mid 2013. I read an article by one idiot saying a Star Wars movie in 2015 sounds rushed.
Um not quite.
Disney has the resources to churn this thing out in 2 years I bet. (Christmas 2014 release of course) but I'm betting the actual date will be closer to the other films with a May release. Disney should have all the pieces in place by then.
As for now, keep away from the rumors, don't believe anything you read until next year.
Think about it. They just bought Lucasfilm for a SONG. What would your reaction be? I'm imagine they're dancing around like Goofy without a clue of what to do next. It'll take months for the excitement dies down and Disney takes a step back to look at their options.
Until then we can only sit and wait by the internet hoping Han Solo shoots first once again.
