Best Chick Flicks

This is another movie category that needed to be tackled, but not by a guy. So... I (Megan) will be bringing you the top 10 chick flicks in my opinion. Now, I do realize that there are WAY too many to name, so if I leave out any good ones, I apologize.

We can't have a "chick flick" category without having Matthew McConaughey in it. Failure to Launch is about a guy whose parents hired this girl to get their 30 yr old son to move out of the house. This is a comedy throughout the whole movie...plus it has a good looking guy in it. What else does there need to be?!
This is probably one of the best chick flicks! The Notebook is so sweet and romantic and you can't help but love all the characters. Even though it makes me cry everytime I watch it, it is still fantastic!
This is a great movie because it has a lot of dancing and a great story line. This best part about this movie is the very last scence. Being the dork i am, I learned this dance and even taught it to Matt. Maybe he can show you the whole dance one day. Maybe sing-along-4?
Oh my gosh you guys...Matt says that Legally Blonde IS my favorite movie. I love Reese Witherspoon and I think she did a fantastic job in this movie. This is by far my favorite movie by her (other than walk the line). It's all about pink and it has a chihuahua in it!!!!
Last movie for the day is While You Were Sleeping. This is a great movie showing how things can change for you unexpectedly. Sandra Bullock's character was in love with this guy and after saving his life, so to speak, she ended up falling in love with the brother. It has a good story plot and all in all it's a great film. Highly recommended to see!

That's all for today! Be back with more tomorrow!!

I hate to take issue with your beautiful bride, Matt, but Failure to Launch is atrocious. I can understand (to a point) having Mr. McConaughey on her list, but How to Lose a Guy in 10 days is far better (and funnier). FTL was a disaster.

I'm sure you'll probably mention it tomorrow, but When Harry Met Sally is the template by which all chick flicks (romantic comedies?) are measured. Although Remy would disagree with me (Jerry Maguire).

I would have to agree with Josh on this one. I would take How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days over FTL any day. Although I am a sucker for McConaughey in just about anything (Wedding Planner, We are Marshall, Sahara, etc).
While You Were Sleeping is definitely one of my favorites...romance and comedy all in one.
Thanks for helping up girls out Megan....we needed this category to be addressed.

I don't get a comment on my blog for days....Megan makes one post and suddenly the comments start piling up!?

I'm going to lose my blog to her I just know it!

Maybe it should be a joint effort....have you considered that? I mean after all what's yours is hers, etc.
Love y'all - hope to see you this weekend....I'll be in town!!

My mom wore out her VHS of While You Were Sleeping. :) Love that movie.

I'd take Wedding Planner over How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

And Jerry Maguire over When Harry Met Sally.

Oh, Emily, how you disappoint me. Jerry Maguire isn't even in the same LEAGUE as WHMS. I died a little inside when you said that.

And The Wedding Planner was another train wreck. HTLAGITD has some legitimately funny stuff in it. I don't think I appreciated it the first time, but since it's on cable every ten minutes, I've been able to catch a lot more. When Kate Hudson goes postal is imminently quotable.

And Matt: there is so much you've been wrong about in your "movie" series, it's impossible to know where to start! At least I can only quibble with ONE of your wife's picks...so far. haha.

Ever consider you're the one with bad movie taste here Melton?

I heard you cried a sweet tear of sadness when you saw Failure to Launch in theaters.

I'm just playing, you know that. YOU'RE SO MONEY!!

Oh Man!! I can't believe that 2 guys think that they can measure what a good chick flick is! Isn't it called 'chick-flick' for a reason?? And Josh, I have to agree with Matt-I would argue with both you and Remy's taste in movies...and even though I dislike Jerry Maguire (as the main character is a major jerk, who never gets redeemed) it still is better than WHMS.
But as far as McConaughey movies are concerned, I would go with How to Lose a guy-as it has the best eating scenes in it. M.M. always eats in movies (as does Brad Pitt) but in that one, he eats amazing-looking crabs and makes that oh-so-delectable looking lamb that she NEVER even tries!!
But I should stop while I'm ahead. Megan, what about Strictly Ballroom? I know, I know, 90's...but a good story/dancing nonetheless!

There may be something to be said about "taste" in movies. But we are specifically talking about the "best" here, as it is stated in the title to this post. Now, normally the category of "chick flick" is equated with romantic comedy. And therefore can be judged by a man or a woman. If romantic comedy is a separate category from chick flick in Megan and Matt's minds, I will happily bow out.

Also, would you agree that movies are a piece of art, at their core? Then you would hopefully also agree that there has to be some aesthetic standard to any form of art, movies included, correct? This does not boil down to merely taste, but what is or is not a quality piece of art. Now, I will admit that we are talking about movies here, not a Mozart symphony (which you, Kajsa, would know much more about than I). So there IS a subjective angle to it. That is why I grant Megan's points about movies like Dirty Dancing, and even How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. But a good movie is a good movie, and I would consider myself a decent judge.

Getting back to the argument at hand, let me first defend Jerry Maguire. Tom Cruise, I would argue, DOES see the error of his ways, and is redeemed. Why do you think he goes back to his wife? Also, I would submit that he is changing throughout the film - look at his decision to focus on LESS clients. However, WHMS is so far superior, as a film, and as a romantic comedy, it's not even close. But this is already too long.

And Matt, you got me. I was weeping like a little girl in Failure to Launch.

Let me just say one more thing. Upon further reflection, I can see how y'all would say that romantic comedy does not equal chick flick. Chick flicks spill in and out of the romantic comedy genre, which is why I did not mention Dirty Dancing or The Notebook. Failure to Launch is a romantic comedy, which is why I singled it out ONLY (and because I liked While you were sleeping and I secretly think Legally Blonde is hilarious. I Object!)

UJ, you "died a little inside"? LOL

You're right. They're not in the same league. But I've never wanted to see WHMS again, whereas I've seen Jerry Maguire many times.

HTLAGI10D was more funny, but Wedding Planner has ALL the quintessential-pull-at-a-woman's-heartstrings elements. She wears her momma's wedding dress. He's a pediatrician, for cryin' out loud!

Vickie said...

Yes....the Wedding Planner does have a way of bringing out the emotions. Classic...simply classic.

I love it! Legally blonde woot! The Notebook is one of my most favorite movies. Sigh. Makes me cry every time.
