Where did that phrase come from? Pull the wool over your eyes

Now here's one that doesn't sound as crazy when you think about it.

Back in the early days of America, men wore wigs of wool. If someone was trying to fool the other, they were essentially "pulling the wool wig" over their eyes so the one being duped wouldn't see it coming.
