Where did that phrase come from? Jumping on the bandwagon

We see sports fans doing it all the time, but where did we get the saying?

It comes from politics believe it or not.

In the 1890's politicians created "bandwagons" to promote themselves at nomination rallies. Supporters of the candidate would get on the bandwagon if they supported them for election.

But when an obvious winner started becoming clear, hundreds of people would flock to that bandwagon to join in their support. In fact, it was Teddy Roosevelt in 1899 who when taking the lead for the presidential nomination for his party exclaim "When I once became sure of the majority, they tumbled over each other to get aboard the bandwagon"

And so the saying began.

And now you know!
